Every year we get hundreds of visitors who come to the store from all over the world who come to Edinburgh for the month of August to go comedy shows, music & party!

We always have a few parties in the store during August so keep looking out for dates when announces them.

At first I was a bit unsure what to make of the whole OFWGKTA movement but I have to say there are bit and pieces of the collectives stuff I like.

My girlfriend got me a copy of the Tyler The Creator album Goblin that after a few listens I got quite into it excluding a couple tracks which I skip right past "Boppin Bitch" being the main one.

I came across this song called 65 by Mellowhype (Hodgy Beasts & Left Brain) after it was performed for the BBC.

Check it out, I even quite enjoyed Tyler The Creator & Left Brains dancing!

SYNOPSIS: 20 years after his father Kevin Flynn's (Jeff Bridges) mysterious disappearance, Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund) has become an angry, trouble-seeking young man. Dubious about taking over his fathers company and living a fairly aimless life, Sam is suddenly thrown into the computer world of "The Grid" where he discovers many truths about his father and the worlds Sam had only previously known about as fairytales. However all is not well, and the world created by Kevin Flynn has been taken over by his evil doppelganger Clu (a CGI-airbrushed Bridges), who has his own designs for Sam and a desire to escape the grid.

There is an interesting question at the heart of Tron: Legacy, Disney's sequel to groundbreaking science fiction film Tron (1982). The question is not so much raised by the content of the film as it is by the film's existence. Why does this film exist? The original Tron was a very minor success with a generally positive critical response and a decent cult following. But if this was all it took to get a sequel, one might wonder why it's taken 28 years.

At this point it is probably prudent for me to mention that I am by no means a great fan of the original. While it is hard not to respect the audacity and spirit of Steven Lisberger's Tron, it is by no means a great film. It is an interesting experiment in special effects but is supported by a very dull story and to be a quite frank, a rather preposterously stupid concept. It remains very much an excuse to experiment with effects and this is perhaps where Tron: Legacy inadvertently is the truest kind of sequel. What relation the two Trons otherwise have is fairly skin deep. While the film gives us light cycles and disc fights revolutionised for the 21st Century, it also has a dour and serious tone which loses any of the somewhat campy, tongue-in-cheek fun of the original.

Bridges older and wiser Flynn has morphed from the smiling, energetic character from the first film to a somewhat moody figure, with an Obi-Wan robe, weird powers that are never really defined or explained and a penchant for spouting the sort of lame philosophy you would hear from a self-important first year uni student, at times it sounds like he's speaking cast-off wisdom from some unmade matrix sequel, which as painful as it sounds, is probably closer to what Tron: Legacy feels like. Meanwhile CGI Bridges struggles valiantly against the infamous uncanny valley, but cannot escape the Zemekis dead-eye syndrome and feels somewhat like Beowulf has popped up as a character in the movie.

Hedlund makes for a pretty dull central protagonist but then again, there is not a whole lot for him to work with. Sam has daddy issues and deals with it by being sarcastic and anti-social, maybe it's down to a generation of filmmakers weaned on Spielberg blockbusters but Hollywood's obsession with absent fathers is becoming somewhat tedious and here does little besides make the film drag.

But to be honest lets face it, this film is not about story, like the original, it is about spectacle. This film represents, not so much a sequel to Tron (evident in the conspicuous absence of a re-release of the original on DVD), as it does Disney chasing some of that Avatar money audiences shelled out last winter. So the important issue is how does it stack up in terms excitement. The highlight is a thrilling light-cycle gladiatorial battle but otherwise the actual action is surprisingly pretty brief, with long periods of characters sitting around being moody or speaking obnoxious psuedo-science and here is my main complaint with the film and in fact is true for both the original and this sequel.

Tron is not science-fiction as much as it is fantasy. The grid has more in common with the magical lands of Narnia then is does with any true scientific concepts and little of what is purported to be scientific theory sounds in anyway plausible. When you boil it down this film is about computer programs that look like people living in a neon blue city that is supposed to be cyber-space, one can't help but feel this is how a three-year old might try rationalise the internet. Both films fill these worlds with somewhat silly prophet like figures and rather odd christian parallels. To claim that scientific theory has gone into anything other then the calculations on the computer graphics would be false and actually somewhat insulting to its audience and the film clearly struggles with plausibility in world where the average person is far more techno-savey then the general public in 1982. The film tries to get by this by creating a backstory for the world which is not only extremely vague but trades on tired biblical story lines, what are Flynn and Clu other then a digital Cane and Able.

In the end commercials director Joseph Krosinski brings a lot of polish to his first feature and it must be said a few nice exciting action scenes and the 3-D is decent and done properly (though personally I find it distracting) but theres no getting over the overall dullness of the film and certain lack of soul (I have heard one reviewer liken it to watching a two hour Nokia advert). But to be honest if I was writing this in 1982 I would probably say the same thing about the original and as stated before, this is the biggest way Tron: Legacy represents a true sequel to the original.

New York’s Reed Space decided to get together with fragrance makers Joya and men’s cosmectics brand Baxter Of California to develop a custom scent. The outcome is LAPSANG NOIR.

“LAPSANG NOIR is a smoky, steaming black Lapsang Souchong Tea with inflections of exotic Indonesian herbal tones over a warm and radiant white floral mix of Tuberose, Pikaki, Ylang Ylang and Jacaranda blossoms.
We were burning the Baxter “Noir” Candle Series at the Staple Design HQ as well as Reed Space on a regular basis. It’s a unanimous favorite for everyone. This inspired us to create a custom scent that was uniquely ours, but still, shared the spirit of Baxter of California and Joya. The result is something that took 15 months to create and we are supremely proud of this collaboration: LAPSANG NOIR.
The Lapsang Noir candle will be available in two sizes: HALF KILO ($84) and FULL KILO ($151). The large
black wax candles have impressive burn times of 100 hours and 200 hours respectively. You can find the candles at Reed Space in NYC and at Baxter Finley (Baxter’s Barber Shop) in Los Angeles. Additionally the candles will be available online at select retail partners.”

Not only do these smell great, but the candles packaging is also simple and beautiful, inspired by the packaging of tea.

THE TOURIST (reviewed by Dawson)

"It all started when I met a woman on the train."

SYNOPSIS: Jack (Johnny Depp), an American tourist on vacation in Italy meets a mysterious woman named Elise (Angelina Jolie) on a train to Venice. Soon after he is pulled into a world of international crime as he is mistaken for a notorious thief. Soon everyone from Scotland Yard to a British Gangster is after him and Jack has to decide whether he can trust Elise and prove his true identity before it's too late.

Back in 2002, Jonathan Demme made The Truth About Charlie, attempting to put a modern spin on Charade (1963), a fun caper film full of double crossing, quick dialogue and beautiful european locations. The Truth About Charlie was generally panned by critics and was a failure at the box office. However it still remains an interesting experiment in Demme's filmography. Now we have another film which has a slight feel of Charade, not to mention the espionage films of Alfred Hitchcock (the early train scene was clearly influenced by North by Northwest) but it has none of the flair of Demme's film and can on no basis be considered anything other then a massive failure.

It is hard to discuss The Tourist without running the risk of just sounding mean spirited but in all honesty it is disgraceful how this film fails on every possible level. Involved in this project is the oscar winning director of The Lives of Others, Florian Hanckel von Donnersmarck, an oscar nominated actor and oscar winning actress, a highly respected supporting cast and two oscar winning screenwriters. How this film is as bad as it is, is quite frankly utterly baffling because with this type of pedigree there should be no excuse.

To start with, Depp is terrible. His career to this point has proven that he is adept at transformation and playing oddballs, but he is unconvincing as an average man, which is really what the character is supposed to be. If his slightly unkempt took is supposed to make him seem normal, it fails badly because at no point during this film does he look like anything other then a movie star on vacation. His delivery of lines which are to be played for comic value are awkward and completely unbelievable. He neither seems witty nor particularly as bewildered as his character is supposed to be. His wide eyed act does little to make him look anything other then faintly simple. His chemistry with Jolie is non-existent and the exchanges which are supposed to come off as witty fall flat and feel awkward.

Jolie isn't much better and what at first looks like a femme fatale soon transforms into a rather impotent, lovelorn woman whose actions make little sense and are never really justified, though that could pretty much describe the plot the movie.

The stench of excessive re-writes reeks from every flat bit of dialogue and there really is little in terms of visual flair. Even the brief points of action, a scramble over the rooftops and a boat escape on the canals, lack any real pace or thrill. To be fair, this is hardly the director's strong suit. The Lives of Others was an intelligent slow burner with intimate characterisation and deep moral issues but hardly involved much in the way of frenetic action. However none of what made his previous film so deep and fascinating is present here and certainly the dull characters and flat dialogue fall far short of both Christopher McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects) and Julian Fellowes (Gosford Park) previous work.

I haven't even gotten to how the film manages to make authentic Venice locations look like cheap Hollywood sets or how the James Newton Howard score manages to be that special combination of both bland and intrusive, but there comes a point where just ranting about how poor a film is becomes rather self indulgent and unproductive.

I've not seen the original french film Anthony Zimmer (2005), which The Tourist is based off (though it seems like an odd choice since it was such a massive flop in its native country) so I have no clue how much the bad plotting could be laid at the feet of the original film, though a synopsis I read seems to confirm that it does have the same stupid twist (BTW: If you think you've guessed the twist, you probably have, that's right, it's that ridiculous and makes no damn sense).

To some extent it doesn't really matter, all these people with far more money and influence then most of us got to go hang out in Venice for a couple of months and shoot a movie. The film smacks of such little effort that we can only assume they must have been having a very good time.

I saw Theophilus London a few weeks ago in Glasgow when he was touring with Big Boi.

The crowd didn't quite understand what he was all about I think it was a bit too experimental in fact he commented it was the first time he has performed infront of a "wax work museum" as he was getting no response from the crowd what so ever.

I quite enjoyed him live, he had some crazy clothes on that kind of took your attention away from him music, never the less I am enjoying this song it has a very 80's feel to it.

"We have to go through the infected zone."

SYNOPSIS: After a NASA space probe crash lands in Mexico, a new breed of creature starts developing causing havoc with the lives of the Mexican people and taking over the landscape of northern Mexico. The film begins 6 years later and followers an American photographer (Scoot McNairy) who is given the task of making sure his boss' daughter gets across the infected zone and back into the United States safely.

Gareth Edwards bargain monster movie has drawn inevitable comparisons with another genre film with an exotic location, a first time director and an unknown cast. However the similarities between this film and Neil Blomkamp's surprise hit of last summer District 9 are very surface level. In many ways it undermines just what an impressive achievement Edwards's film really is. While taking nothing away from Blomkamp, District 9 was film with a 30 million dollar budget and Peter Jackson's name as an Executive Producer (having been originally hand picked by Jackson to direct a Halo film) to help sell the film. Bloomkamp also had a wide experience directing high budget, special effects heavy commercials for Nike and Citron (the famous transformer ad). Edwards' CV on the other hand shows little outside of special effects and TV work, certainly nothing that would hint at his confident debut.

The film is an interesting mesh of monster flick and art house road film, almost a like Before Sunrise with monsters. Here is where the District 9 comparison becomes really inaccurate. Monsters is not so much a movie about two people running away from creatures as it is about two people connecting through the shared experience of a journey. Edwards, acting as writer, director, his own DP and even doing the special effects takes great pleasure in giving the characters breathing room, nicely balancing them to create a nice sense of reality. We are introduced to both Andrew (Scoot McNairy) and Samantha (Whitney Able) fairly abruptly and given little to cling to in the way of signifiers. Andrew is a photographer and Samantha's the daughter of Andrew's boss, a wealthy publisher. We will be given a few more significant pieces of information over the running time, but really we discover the characters as they discover each other and beyond their immediate interaction little is ever given.

McNairy and Able make for a convincing and natural screen couple (unsurprising since they are actually married in real life) and McNairy's starring role in the similarly themed (sans monsters of course) art house film In Search of a Midnight Kiss was no doubt a big reason for his casting in this movie. The budding romance throughout the film is hinted at nicely in the way the two slowly connect and Edwards takes great pleasure in keeping the camera close in on the actor's faces, watching for all the little expressions hinting at their growing feelings.

However anyone who is expecting a fast paced, action heavy film full of encounters with the tentacled beasts of the title will be sorely disappointed. Certainly their is nothing visually to rival the amazing finale of Distric 9. Overall the creatures are mostly hinted at and even when they do appear are generally left cloaked in shadow and darkness. However the danger is always present. Edwards effects work with the monsters is for the most part top notch and only a few scenes where he adds in tanks or buildings destroyed by the monsters stick out. But really the story of the film itself is almost as interesting.

Made for under £500,000, Edwards took a camera, two actors and sound recordist with him to Mexico. He had a basic story concept and the rest was created through improvising with the actors and using what they could find while shooting (all the Mexican supporting cast are non-professionals). Cobbling the film together from 100 hours of footage he creates something that is beautiful to watch without loosing its sense of immediacy and docu-drama style. One can only wonder what he could've achieved with 30 million and hopefully we will find out soon, because with one film Edwards has clearly marked himself out as one of the most exciting new filmmakers in Britain.

Unstoppable (review by Dawson)

"We're not talking about a train, we're talking about a missile the size of the Chrysler Building!"

When I first saw the trailer for Unstoppable, one question more then anything else sprung to mind, why don't they just take things off the tracks? In terms of danger level, a runaway train seems fairly low since it's on a track and can only move in two directions. How wrong I was.

The plot is simple, a lazy railroad worker (Ethan Suplee) inadvertently sets an un-maned train on a collision course with a bunch of fuel tank silos in the middle of a town (seems like poor city planning) and only a grizzled veteran railroad worker (Denzel Washington) and mouthy young-gun trainee (Chris Pine) can save the day but only if they can get across their generational divide and deal with their damn woman issues.

It is not hard to read Unstoppable as a film about male inadequacy and impotence with both the main characters dealing with family fallouts revolving around the fairer sex. Washington's character is dealing with a dead wife and disinterested daughters working at Hooters, while Pine is in the midst of court proceedings following domestic issues. If conquering the shark in Jaws had certain male vs feminist subtextual connotations, then Unstoppable represents two men dealing with one hell of a phallic symbol. In fact Rosario Dawson as the train yardmaster is the only fleshed out female part and even she is relegated to a subservient female role by the end, kissing both the heroes at the finale. The end result is very much stopping the train allows them to regain their manhood (this reading along with Denzel and Pine's bro-mance is also quite amusing when you consider this is from the director of Top Gun), but in all honesty, that is hardly the point.

Scott makes a brief attempt at social commentary with reference to constant layoffs and a disgruntled working-class juxtaposed with the alien world of high level suits playing golf and sitting in board rooms, while two working stiffs deal with the mess. But it's all filler in-between sections where the train "liquifies" anything in its path. These moments of reflection upon the current state of the economy are indeed handled with the same subtlety of the train levelling a truck (it doesn't make a huge amount of sense why it happens but you won't really care). Besides nobody watched Man on Fire and worried how it represented American/Mexican foreign relations.

So to the point, the train scenes are handled spectacularly and it is hard to imagine another director more perfect to make this film then Tony Scott. Having already injected high-octane excitement into fighter jets, submarines (Crimson Tide) and even Nascar (Days of Thunder) Scott easily sidesteps the obvious problem (a train can only go in two directions) and manages to push the audience's buttons as he throws everything that could go wrong at you and even adds a few things you might not have been expecting. The film probably peeks just before the climax but it's a truly thrilling last half hour and the best compliment a film like this can be handed is that it's never boring.

Washington and Pine have little to work with in-terms of script but the few extended dialogue scenes prove just why this is no great tragedy and both have enough charisma to carry them through the whole: realising they've got more in common then they first thought story arc they're given. In fact I defy anyone not to want to stand up and pump your fist when Pine announces over the radio "we're going to run this bitch down" (the theme of male inadequacy in the face of overpowering women rearing it's head again perhaps?).

Having referenced Jaws earlier, Unstoppable does have the feel of seventies disaster movie like The Poseidon Adventure or Airport which gives you an idea of exactly what the film is, ten minutes to set up the problem, around eighty minutes trying to solve that problem and a minute to wrap the whole thing up. It's fast, it's fun and it un-apologetically defies the laws of common sense and physics. Best Tony Scotts film in a long time.
